Charity benefit auctions are vital for many organizations, providing essential funds to sustain operations and support community programs. However, while the financial stakes are high, it’s crucial to remember that attendees come with the expectation to have a great time. A successful auction isn’t just about asking for donations; it’s about crafting an engaging experience that keeps guests returning year after year.
For that reason, I always recommend to my clients that they include at least a few minutes of diversion in the form of games, separate from (but related to) the auction itself. Incorporating games into the event can significantly enhance attendees’ experiences.
Games are low stakes, high fun quotient, and are never big money makers. You might ask then, “Why bother, Keith? Let’s not waste time on activities that don’t make money.”Although it may seem counterproductive to focus on activities that don’t necessarily raise funds, their true value lies in fostering community and connection among attendees. Many guests may not have the means to bid on high-ticket items, but they still want to contribute. By offering lower-stakes engagement through games or raffles, organizations can encourage more attendees to participate. When someone spends money on game-related donations, they are likely to share their positive experiences with friends and family, amplifying the organization’s reach.
The essence of these games is not to overshadow the auction or mission, but rather, to create a memorable atmosphere where guests can enjoy themselves. Achieving high participation rates in games enhances the overall experience, encouraging guests to embrace the spirit of giving. Ideally, I would like 100% audience participation in any games I organize, but even if it ends up being 50%, that’s way more participation than the 10-25% who typically either raise a paddle in the Fund-a-Need or end up buying something in the Live Auction.
Interestingly, while attendees may not recall specific diversions after the event, the staying power of feelings of joy and community are significant. No matter how wealthy someone is, and no matter how they feel about an organization, they attend charity benefits as a way to connect with other people, to see and be seen, and especially to have a good time. I tell people: it’s not a meeting, it’s not a convention, it’s not a business event - it’s a party! Party games go with the territory and are a great use of time. So don’t forget to put some “fun” in your “fun-draiser!”
